One of the highest bars to entry to 3D printing is learning how to 3D model. Aside from buying a printer and learning how to make it work, creating something of your own worth printing is a whole other field of softwares and skills to learn, And no matter what 3D modeling software you might use, how simple or advanced, from TinkerCAD to Z-Brush, the transition from drawing in 2D to drawing in 3D is a doozy.

Smoothie-3D, a new, free, and browser-based modeling program makes this transition as easy as possible. As you can see in the video below, Smoothie-3D allows you to make 3D models out of 2D images simply by tracing from a 2D background. The program does most of the work for you, making a solid 3D shape from your tracing, and applying the texture from the background image automatically.

You still need a steady hand to make things come out exactly as you want, and a using a drawing tablet or touch-screen is probably preferable to a mouse, and everything requires a little tweaking to be perfect; but this program is the most intuitive way we've tried for learning how to draw in a 3D space.

Making an account is free, and you can get started right away. If you've been itching to learn how to 3D model, we recommend trying this out right away.
