Bio-Printing still feels like one of the most sci-fi parts of 3D Printing- the ability to re-engineer and fix our fallible, aging bodies. There are currently only a few companies working on this type of technology, and as with any new technology, there are issues regarding costs. Despite a lot of demand, and several applications for these printers, the sheer lack of supply, and R&D makes them quite expensive.
Singapore based Bio3D Technologies, founded just over a year ago is looking to bring costs down with their introduction of their Bio3D Life Printer 'X'. This printer follows two patents for micro and bio-printing filed last September, and, if it can do what it claims, could be a game changer within medical and research communities. And, as the company says they will lease the printers starting at a cost of around $2390 USD, even smaller companies, universities, and medical organizations will have access to this powerful technology.
Part of what makes the Life Printer ‘X’ so amazing is its versatility. The printer modular, and different modules can be used for different materials and requirements. The printer is capable of printing with biological and non-biological material, meaning that synthetic materials can be printed within the same object as cells, allowing researchers to print cell infused scaffolds. Cells, proteins, antibodies, bacteria and plastics can all be printed within one session, giving researchers the ability to study their interactions with one another. Additionally, the printer is accurate up to 10 microns, and can print on any size or shape of labware or container.
According to Bio3D, the Life Printer ‘X’ can be used in the fields of antibodies, bacteriology, biofilms, cancers, diagnosis, drug testing and development, embryogenesis, proteins, regenerative medicine, stem cells, tissue engineering, virology, and much more.
